3 Vehicle Safety Features To Keep You Safer And That May Save You Money On Insurance

Posted on

In total, there are more than 37,000 people that die in a car crash each year in the U.S., and roughly 2.35 million others that are injured or disabled. For that reason, it is important that you consider how you can encourage safety on the road. While your safe driving habits will do a lot of good, there are certain high-tech auto features that you may want to think about as well. Not only will these keep you safer on the road, they may even help save you money on your car insurance premium. Here are three car safety features to consider:

1. Rearview Camera

One of the riskiest maneuvers you can make in your vehicle is backing out of the driveway or a parking spot. You may not realize it, but each week there are at least 50 children that are involved in backover accidents where a vehicle is in reverse at the time of the crash. Two out of those 50 are killed, while the other 48 must receive treatment at the hospital. Although there is not a law in place that requires rearview cameras, they are recommended by the Transportation Department. Many newer vehicles are coming standard with these rearview cameras, but they are available for aftermarket purchase and installation for older vehicles.

2. Blind Spot Monitoring

The blind spot is the contributing factor in a number of accidents. It's dangerous when you're trying to move into another lane and a vehicle is there that you didn't see. Some automakers are beginning to make blind spot monitoring available in their vehicles. These systems usually will have a light in the side mirror that will illuminate if there is a vehicle present in your blind spot. Some may even have an audio alert inside the cabin of the vehicle that will sound when you turn on your blinker and a vehicle is in your blind spot. Even if your vehicle doesn't come equipped with it, you can purchase an aftermarket system and have it installed.

3. Forward Collision Warning System

This system is ultimately another set of eyes for you when driving. Using either a camera or radar, the forward collision warning system will warn drivers when there is the potential of a crash up ahead which would involve the front of their vehicle crashing into the back of another vehicle. The warning will normally come as a loud alert or a flashing light. Research has shown that these systems have been able to reduce rear-end collisions by roughly 10 percent and decrease the number of auto insurance claims filed.

If you have recently purchased a new vehicle with one of these safety features or had one of them installed on your vehicle, make sure you inform your insurance agent and receive a new auto insurance quote. In many cases, your auto insurance premium may be reduced because you are ultimately reducing your risk of being involving in an accident.
